In February 2022, Begirale, Dominion’s computer vision business unit, will install the begiCROSSING system at a level crossing of the French railway network in the town of Rion des Landes.
The project, led by SNCF RÉSEAU, seeks to verify the functionality of this novel product and its ability to adapt to the railway infrastructure managed by SNCF RÉSEAU, as a potential tool to increase the safety of its level crossings.
begiCROSSING is an artificial vision system that allows detecting risk situations in railway level crossings. To do this, it processes in real time and unattended the video signal from a camera focused on the risk area of the crossing; and if a dangerous situation is detected, it generates signals to alert both the train driver and the railway control center.
begiCROSSING is the first system based on computer vision technology to be operational and integrated with railway signaling systems. Additionally, at the beginning of 2021, the system obtained the SIL 3 certification. In this way, the “Obstacle Detector” version of the product became the first system based on Artificial Vision in the world to achieve this certification in the railway environment, opening the door to the widespread use of this type of technology in this sector.
The first begiCROSSING installation was carried out in 2017 on the Basque railway network, where there are currently 27 level crossings with this latest generation obstacle detector. In this period, the system has supervised the passage of nearly 3 million trains, allowing the identification and solving of numerous dangerous situations, and contributing to a perfect zero train-vehicle collision at the level crossings where it is installed.
