- There are already 22 level crossings at Euskal Trenbide Sarea with this intelligent artificial vision system to improve their safety
- In the four years that the system has been operating in the level crossings of ETS, it has supervised the passage of more tan 1.3 million trains, contributing to a perfect zero train-vehicle collision

begiCROSSING, the intelligent artificial vision system, developed by Begirale Controlling Risk, DOMINION’s artificial vision area, has been installed in another 5 level crossings of the Basque railway infrastructure manager, Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS) with the aim of improving safety at these critical points, where the railroad interacts with road vehicles and pedestrians. This measure joins those adopted in recent years and in which begiCROSSING was successfully installed in 17 level crossings. With these 5 new equipment, which will be operational this October, there are already 22 ETS level crossings that have this advanced technology to optimize their safety.
Over the four years it has been in operation, the system has supervised the passage of more than 1,300,000 trains, contributing to a perfect zero train-vehicle collision at the level crossings where it is installed.
The level crossings that have incorporated this unique technology are located in Larrondo and Formeta, both in Loiu and belonging to the Txorierri line, in Zuhatzu (Galdakao) and in Torretxo (Berriz) belonging to the Bilbao-Donosia line and in Busturia on the Amorebieta-Bermeo line.
From now on these 5 level crossings, that already had barriers and ligth and acoustic signals installed, will have this innovative system that will monitor the movement of vehicles and people through these points. The system will generate warnings and alarms when anomalous situations occur, which will be transmitted both to the management system installed in the command post and to the level crossing itself. In this way, it will be possible to act on the signaling systems of the LC by modifying the signal and alerting the driver of the existence of an incident.
The system detects anomalies and incidents from the analysis of video signals in real time; For this, one camera is used to capture the danger zone of the level crossing. The captured video is processed in real time and allow determining alterations in the normal operating sequences of the level crossing or the traffic that crosses it, determining an alarm or event in case of detecting any alteration.
begiCROSSING technology, in which railway infrastructure managers from several countries have already been interested, has been recognized as one of the ‘best practices’ at an international level to improve the safety of level crossings by the report’ Analysis of level crossing safety in Europe and beyond ‘, carried out within the framework of the European project SAFER-LC, executed by a research consortium of which 17 organizations of various kinds from 10 countries are part.
